Trivia games have been a mainstay in party entertainment since the 60s and on our tables since the production of Trivial Pursuit in the late 70s. When the idea of playing a trivia game comes up, everyone knows what that means; topical questions revolving around sports, history, art, pop culture, etc… The person with the most correct answers wins. MLB Showdown

MLB Showdown is a Trading Card Game (TCG) that was printed from 2000 to 2005 that simulates baseball. It is the game on which I have spent the most money in my life, as I spent the majority of my income in high school on the game.  For those unaware, a TCG is a game where players buy a pack of cards (commonly called “boosters”) in order to construct a deck to play against other decks. MLB Showdown is an amazing game, one I have very fond memories of, and really is exactly what it seeks to be: a TCG version of a baseball simulator. (more…)

Five Crowns

Rummy is a card game I grew up playing often on the weekends with my family growing up. I have fond memories of camping and playing runs and sets of three. Five Crowns is basically a Rummy variant that uses a lot of wild cards. It is a game that consists of 11 rounds and, as the slogan of the game says, the game isn’t over until the kings go wild. Tell me if you have heard this before: there’s a worker placement game where there are a variety of ways to score points and at certain points you must feed your workers or else you suffer a harsh penalty. If you are a Eurogame fan, you are used to these now with classics such as Agricola, La Havre and Stone Age. Those are just some of the highest regarded ones, and, as one might expect, there are many intimidating aspects. (more…)

Scattergories

Scattergories is a word based party game for 2–6 players where the goal is to think of the most words that all start with a certain randomly determined letter and fit into a number of categories all in about 3 minutes.The catch is that players want to think of answers that no other player has written down.
